On 08 October 2019, five finalists will battle it out in the #StartMeUp Pitch final, they will pitch face to face with our experienced panel of judges to win the ultimate prize, six months office space at Orega Glasgow.
We've had some amazing entries and it was extremely difficult to narrow down to five, but without further ado, here are the Glasgow #StartMeUp Pitch finalists with their businesses…
Danny Campbell – Hoko Design
"I found out I was due to become a father a few months after my 25 birthday following a sabbatical to Vancouver playing semi-pro rugby. I applied for 8 respectable architecture jobs, received offers from all of them before opting to set up my own company. Within the first year my turnover was over double that of the highest job offer I had received. Hoko Design has grown year on year since its incorporation in 2016, without debt, investment, funding or grants. In 2019 I lost a retained client (75% of my income), launched the new business model, continued to play high-level rugby, hired a team of 6, opened my first office, had a second child, lead the completion of a multi-million pound project and completed the Architect examinations through the RIBA whilst upholding my responsibility as a sole breadwinner. I'm now 28 and it's been an exciting few years developing what has been described in national press as "the Uber of Architecture". The time has come to reveal the proof of concept and accelerate a new paradigm in residential architecture and it starts at the Orega 'StartMeUp' Pitch."
Ryan Carenduff – Turtle Pack
"I'm the Chief Executive Officer of Turtle Pack and have been full-time in the business since September 2018. Prior to that, I worked with the business in a different capacity as the Founder of the UK’s first sport business incubator, The Sport Hive, of which Turtle Pack was a member of. I also run a pan national entrepreneurship programme that develops new ideas for sports products, services and technologies."
Vandana Vijay – Bounce Back
"I'm a biochemist by background, and also a CIM qualified marketer. I co-founded Bounce Back Drinks- a functional health drinks company born out of the passion to bring the benefits of life sciences into everyday consumer products focusing on specific health challenges. The first drink launched is the UK’s first after alcohol revival drink - Bounce Back."
Tracy McGrath – Mac Recruit Group Ltd
"Glasgow born and bred, my dream was to set up my own agency – take all the good and bad bits from my previous experiences to create something really special. I finally made the bold/brave move to start up with Iain McBride, who I have known since high school. Mac Recruit was formed on some really basic principles – treat staff, clients and candidates well and in turn have a great reputation in a very saturated market. We offer something different to clients, we highlight areas to improve processes, challenge decisions and most importantly we're fully transparent. Since Mac Recruit Group started in January 2019, through hard work, building a highly regarded reputation in our specialist sectors – we are working with the worlds largest Oil/Gas and Education clients – not bad from a wee company from Glasgow. Making the decision to start my own business was a frightening but exciting prospect and we are overwhelmed with our success and growth in such a short period of time. This is only the beginning."
Jack Allison and Declan McGallagly – CU Apps
"Jack and I are two of three directors and co-founders of CU Apps. We've worked together on technology products in the credit union sector for over 6 years. After meeting through a high school Young Enterprise project, we worked with the Scottish Police Credit Union to develop the first mobile banking app for credit unions in the UK. We each then attended university, during which we maintained CU Apps and since graduating have chosen to work exclusively in the sector - growing our offering and client base."
We wish the finalists on the 08 October 2019 all the best of luck!
